A Custom WordPress Theme Development Service Behind a Philadelphia Credit Union’s Rebrand

A Philadelphia brand agency had just finished a full rebrand for a regional credit union and needed the website to carry it. The credit union’s marketing team wanted to build rate pages and promotions without calling a developer, while compliance wanted nothing on the site that had not been approved. Softvole’s custom WordPress theme development service gave both teams what they needed.

Project overview

A Custom WordPress Theme Development Service for a Regulated Brand

Why a custom WordPress theme development service beat a premium theme

The credit union’s previous site ran on a premium multipurpose theme with a page builder. Editors had unlimited freedom, which meant inconsistent pages, mismatched colors, and rate tables typed by hand. Two rate errors in 2025 required corrections and a compliance review.

Softvole built a custom block theme where the brand lives in theme.json, editors work with approved patterns, and rates come from a single data source. Editors kept flexibility. They lost the ability to accidentally break the brand or publish a wrong rate.

Agency Brand agency, 20 staff, Old City, Philadelphia
End client Regional credit union, 14 branches
Scope Custom block theme, 34 patterns, rate tables, accessibility
Timeline 9 weeks, July to September 2026
Stack WordPress full site editing, theme.json, custom blocks, rate data feed
Engagement Fixed fee, white label

Executive summary

  • Problem: a page builder that allowed off-brand pages and hand-typed rate tables.
  • Solution: a custom block theme with locked brand tokens, 34 approved patterns, and rate tables pulled from one data feed.
  • Efficiency: promotion page build time fell from 6.5 to 2.0 hours.
  • Accessibility: automated errors dropped from 156 to 0 across key templates.
  • Speed: mobile LCP improved from 4.3 to 1.7 seconds in lab tests.

Short answer: A custom WordPress theme development service builds a theme designed for one brand, with only the layouts and controls that brand needs. For a Philadelphia credit union, Softvole’s custom block theme cut page build time by 69% and removed hand-typed rate tables.

The challenge

Editorial Freedom Versus Brand and Compliance

Financial institutions publish rates, disclosures, and promotions that must be accurate. The credit union’s marketing team of four needed to launch a new promotion every few weeks. Every launch went through compliance review, and every review caught formatting or consistency problems that delayed it.

The brand agency had invested months in the new identity. It wanted a theme that would protect that work long after handoff.

Rates in too many places

The same certificate rate appeared on six pages, typed by hand each time. Updating rates took a full afternoon and still produced errors.

Off-brand drift

The page builder exposed every color and font setting. Within months of any redesign, pages started to drift.

Accessibility exposure

The old site had 156 automated accessibility errors on key templates, including low-contrast text and unlabeled form fields.

Discovery: Where Errors and Delays Came From

We reviewed the last four promotions with the marketing team and the compliance officer, tracing every change request back to its cause.

Cause of compliance revision Share of revisions
Rate typed differently on different pages About a third
Disclosure missing, outdated, or in the wrong place About a third
Off-brand colors, fonts, or layouts About a fifth
Other copy changes The remainder

Most revisions were not about wording. They were structural problems a theme could prevent: one source for rates, disclosures attached to content, and locked brand styles.

The approach

How Softvole Built the Theme

We designed the editing experience as carefully as the visitor experience.

  1. Brand tokens in theme.json

Colors, type scale, spacing, and button styles are defined once. Editors choose from the brand palette only, and contrast pairs are pre-approved.

    • theme.json
    • Design tokens
  2. 34 approved block patterns

Hero sections, rate comparisons, promotion banners, branch cards, and disclosure blocks are available as patterns compliance has already reviewed.

    • Block patterns
    • Pattern locking
  3. Single source for rates

A custom rate block pulls from one rates table maintained in the admin. Change a rate once and every page updates, with an effective date shown automatically.

    • Custom blocks
    • Rate data
  4. Disclosures attached to content

Promotions require a linked disclosure before publishing. A pre-publish check prevents a promotion page from going live without one.

    • Pre-publish checks
    • Compliance workflow
  5. Accessibility built into components

Every pattern was tested for keyboard use, screen readers, and contrast before editors ever saw it.

    • WCAG 2.2 AA
    • Accessible components

Inside the Pattern Library

The 34 patterns fall into five groups, each reviewed once by compliance before editors could use them.

  • Heroes (6): product, promotion, branch, campaign, community, and plain variants.
  • Rates and products (8): certificate tables, loan rate cards, comparison rows, and calculators.
  • Trust and community (7): member stories, community events, awards, and insurance notices.
  • Branches (5): branch cards, hours, ATM finder links, and contact panels.
  • Disclosures and legal (8): footnotes, rate disclosures, and promotion terms that must accompany specific content.

Editors can combine patterns freely, but they cannot change colors outside the palette or publish a promotion without its disclosure block. WCAG 2.2 contrast and keyboard checks were run on every pattern before release.

What Did Not Go to Plan

Rate data arrived in two formats

Deposit rates came from the finance team’s spreadsheet, loan rates from a different system export. Instead of two inputs, we built one admin rates screen and a simple import for each format, with a preview so finance staff can confirm changes before they go live.

Editors wanted more freedom in month one

After launch, the marketing team asked to change background colors on some sections. Rather than unlock the palette, we added two approved background variants as block styles. Requests like this are normal; answering them inside the system keeps the brand protected.

Who Did What

Role Responsibility
Brand agency creative lead Brand rules, design approvals
Credit union marketing team Content, editor testing
Credit union compliance officer Pattern and disclosure review
Credit union finance team Rate data and approval workflow
Softvole developers and QA Theme, patterns, rate system, accessibility

Reviewing patterns with compliance once, before launch, replaced reviewing every page forever after.

Results

Faster Pages, Accurate Rates, Consistent Brand

Operational figures compare the last four promotions on the old site with the first four on the new theme. Speed and accessibility compare the main templates before and after.

How we measured these results

Business figures: Build time and review rounds were logged by the credit union’s marketing team for each promotion. Rate update time was measured on the first rate change after launch.
Speed: LCP is the median of three Lighthouse mobile lab runs on the homepage and two rate pages. Lab figures only.
Attribution: The rebrand itself also changed copy and photography. Speed and editing gains are tied directly to the theme. We did not measure member acquisition, since the rebrand campaign makes attribution unclear.
The practical win for the agency: The agency handed off a site it is confident will stay on brand, and the credit union signed a retainer for quarterly pattern additions.
Agency takeaway

Quarterly Pattern Additions

The credit union signed a retainer for new patterns each quarter, delivered through the brand agency. Each new pattern goes through the same compliance review once, then becomes available everywhere. The site runs on Softvole care with monthly accessibility spot checks.

For the technical background, read our guide to customization vs custom themes and our page speed guide. The DC accessibility remediation case shows how a similar component-first approach fixed errors across 300 pages, and our development service page covers scope and process.

What We Would Do Differently

We would map every rate source during discovery, including who updates it and how often, rather than finding the second format mid-build. We would also run an editor workshop on staging two weeks before launch; the background color request would have surfaced then and been built into the first release.

What Brand Agencies Should Ask of a Theme

Lock the brand, free the content

Theme.json and pattern locking let editors work fast without drifting off brand.

One source of truth for numbers

Rates, prices, and hours should be entered once and displayed everywhere.

Design the editor experience

Your client’s marketing team uses the theme every day. Their workflow deserves as much design attention as the homepage.

Frequently asked questions

What is a custom WordPress theme development service?

It is the design and build of a WordPress theme made for one brand, with only the templates, blocks, and settings that brand needs, instead of a general-purpose premium theme.

For most brand-led sites, yes. Block themes are lighter, follow WordPress core, and let you lock brand styles while still giving editors flexible layouts.

Yes. Editors assemble pages from approved patterns and blocks. They can create new layouts without changing brand colors, fonts, or spacing.

This theme took nine weeks, including 34 patterns and custom rate blocks. Simpler themes for smaller sites usually take three to five weeks.

How we measured these results

Business figures: Build and care hours come from the agency’s and Softvole’s time tracking. The earlier cancellation rate is for the agency’s old hosting plans, which is the closest comparable recurring product.
Speed: Starter designs score a median mobile LCP of 1.6 seconds in lab tests, but speed was not compared before and after.
Attribution: Five months is early for churn data, and spring and summer are busy seasons for contractors. We will revisit churn after a full year.
The practical win for the agency: Subscription revenue now covers the agency’s fixed costs each month, which changes how it hires and how it prices other services.

How we measured these results

Business figures: Ticket data comes from the agency’s Jira board. Missed publish dates were counted from the editorial calendar where a piece moved because of a technical blocker.
Speed: Page speed was not a goal of this engagement, though six of nine sites improved after theme cleanup.
Attribution: Some of the backlog reduction came from closing tickets that were no longer relevant during the audit (21 tickets). We report closed tickets separately to show real throughput.
The practical win for the agency: The agency added a technical SEO offer for its SaaS clients, delivered by the same dedicated developer, without adding headcount.
